Cover Letter Examples

The best cover letters are brief, clear, and written in the 1st person point-of-view. Never write a cover letter or a résumé in the 3rd person.

A good cover letter matches the resume but DOES NOT SIMPLY RESTATE the same exact points in the resume.

Three paragraphs, in the body of the resume, will normally be enough to effectively communicate your intent and interest in the position. The following example shows how simple a cover letter can be:

Here are a few tip to remember:

  1. Express your enthusiastic nature without being arrogant.
  2. Don’t be afraid to sell yourself. You can show more of your personality in a cover letter than in the resume.
  3. Avoid using humor.
  4. Creating simple sentences is okay. This isn’t the place to experiment with complex conceptual ideas or big words. Use words everyone understands. If great novelists write like this so can you.
  5. Be consistent – Mixing fonts styles and size, overuse of bold, italics, and underlining makes for difficult reading and a poor visual impact. Avoid these mistakes.
  6. Accuracy – Make sure your letter (and your resume for that matter) are free of typos, grammatical and word usage errors. Proof, proof and proof again. If you’re still uncomfortable, seek out a friend or professional (with a strong command of written English)  to look it over for you.
